Dozens of Gazans killed and wounded in Israeli assault that Hamas warns may threaten truce talks

CAIRO/GAZA (Reuters) -Palestinians fled under Israeli fire as tanks thrust deeper into Gaza City on Tuesday while dozens were killed or wounded in an airstrike in the enclave’s south as Israel stepped up an offensive that Hamas said could jeopardise ceasefire talks.
The airstrike later on Tuesday hit tents housing displaced families outside a school in the town of Abassan east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, Palestinian medical officials said.
The Israeli military said it was looking into the report.
On Gaza City’s front lines, the armed wings of Hamas and its ally Islamic Jihad said their fighters battled Israeli forces with machine guns, mortar fire and anti-tank missiles and had killed and wounded Israeli soldiers.
Israel’s military did not comment on casualties but said its soldiers were engaged in close-quarter combat with militants, had taken more than 150 fighters out of action in the last week and destroyed booby-trapped buildings and explosives.
The latest fighting has unfolded as senior U.S. officials were in the region to push for a ceasefire after Hamas made concessions last week. But Israel’s renewed campaign threatened talks at a crucial time and could bring negotiations “back to square one”, Hamas quoted leader Ismail Haniyeh as saying.
Footage circulated on social media showed families packed onto donkey carts and in the backs of trucks piled with mattresses and other belongings making their way through Gaza City’s streets to flee areas under Israeli evacuation orders.
“Gaza City is being wiped out, this is what is happening. Israel is forcing us to leave homes under fire,” Um Tamer, a mother of seven, told Reuters via a chat app.
She said it was the seventh time her family had fled their house in Gaza City, in the north of the enclave and one of Israel’s first targets at the start of the war in October.
“We can’t take it anymore, enough of death and humiliation. End the war now,” she said.
Israeli tanks pushed deeper into several city districts including Shejaia, Sabra and Tel Al-Hawa, where residents have reported some of the most fierce fighting in months.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said all of its medical clinics were out of service in Gaza City due to Israeli evacuation orders that have driven thousands of people westward towards the Mediterranean and to the south.
Nine months of war and displacement have caused a hunger crisis, and the recent deaths of several more children from malnutrition in the Gaza Strip indicate that famine has spread throughout the coastal enclave, a group of independent human rights experts mandated by the United Nations.
In a Khan Younis hospital, Palestinian woman Ghaneyma Joma told Reuters she feared her son would die of starvation.
“It’s distressing to see my child…lying there dying from malnutrition because I cannot provide him with anything due to the war, the closing of crossings and the contaminated water,” she said, seated on the floor next to her motionless son, who had an intravenous drip attached to his wrist.
AIRSTRIKES
In Al-Nuseirat in central Gaza, an Israeli airstrike early on Tuesday on a house of several storeys killed 17 people, including 14 children and a woman, Hamas’ media office said.
Neighbours rushed to help medics and emergency workers recover bodies and search for survivors under the rubble.
“They were displaced during the night after Al-Nuseirat camp school was hit… They said they would sleep in the house, fearing for the children and there was a massacre in the house. They are not safe in the schools nor the houses,” said Yasser Abu Hamada, a local resident.
Across Gaza, more than 40 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City in the north, Al-Bureij, Deir Al-Balah and Al-Nuseirat in central Gaza and in Rafah in the south, according to medics.
The total Palestinian death toll in the nine-month-long Israeli military offensive has now reached 38,243, Gaza health officials said in their latest update.
The war erupted when militants led by Hamas infiltrated southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli figures.
Hopes among Gazans of a pause in the fighting had revived after Hamas last week accepted a key part of a U.S. ceasefire proposal. Qatari and Egyptian mediators, backed by the United States, have accelerated efforts this week and talks will resume in Doha on Wednesday, Egypt’s state-affiliated media said.
An Egyptian security delegation will head to Qatar’s capital “on a mission to bring viewpoints closer between Hamas and Israel in order to reach a truce agreement as soon as possible”, Al-Qahera News quoted a senior source as saying.
“There is an agreement over many points,” the senior source said, adding the negotiations will return to Cairo on Thursday.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Sean “Diddy” Combs used his fame as one of the biggest names in hip-hop to coerce women into engaging in demeaning sex acts as part of a long-running scheme of sex trafficking and racketeering, according to a three-count federal indictment unsealed on Tuesday.
Combs, 54, used the business empire he controlled, including his record label Bad Boy Entertainment, to transport women, as well as male sex workers, across state lines to take part in recorded sexual performances called “Freak Offs” in which the music mogul would watch and masturbate, prosecutors said.
The rapper and producer, arrested in Manhattan on Monday night, is expected to appear in court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robyn Tarnofsky at 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT) on Tuesday.
Combs faces a mandatory minimum 15-year prison sentence and up to life behind bars if convicted of the three felony counts: racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution.
The office of Manhattan U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, which brought the charges, said in a court filing that the stiff potential sentence could give Combs incentive to flee.
Prosecutors have asked Tarnofsky to order Combs to remain detained pending trial. Defense lawyers are asking to have him released on $50 million bond secured by his Miami home.
Prosecutors accused Combs of running a criminal enterprise to facilitate his exploitation of women, dating back at least 16 years.
According to the indictment, Combs enticed women by giving them drugs such as ketamine and ecstasy, financial support, or promises of career support or a romantic relationship. Combs then used surreptitious recordings of the sex acts as “collateral” to ensure that the women would remain silent, and sometimes displayed weapons to intimidate abuse victims and witnesses, prosecutors said.
“The victims did not believe they could refuse Combs without risking their security or facing more abuse,” Williams told a press conference. “This office is determined to investigate and prosecute anyone who engages in sex trafficking, no matter how powerful or wealthy or famous you may be.”
The indictment did not specify how many women were alleged victims. It contained no allegation that Combs himself directly engaged in unwanted sexual contact with women, though he was accused of assaulting them by punching, kicking, dragging and throwing objects.
Also known during his career as P. Diddy and Puff Daddy, Combs founded Bad Boy records and is credited with helping turn rappers and R&B singers such as Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars in the 1990s and 2000s.
‘NOT A CRIMINAL’
Marc Agnifilo, a lawyer for Combs, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. Agnifilo on Monday expressed disappointment with the “unjust” prosecution of his client, calling Combs “an imperfect person” but “not a criminal.”
Combs is the highest-profile music industry figure charged with sexual misconduct since R&B singer R. Kelly was sentenced to a combined 31 years in prison after being convicted in New York in 2021 and Chicago in 2022 sex trafficking, racketeering, child sex crimes and other counts.
His career and reputation have been marred over the past year. Last November, his former girlfriend Casandra Ventura, an R&B singer known as Cassie, accused him in a lawsuit of serial physical abuse, sexual slavery and rape. She agreed to an undisclosed settlement one day after suing. Combs denied her allegations.
New York Mayor Eric Adams asked Combs to return a commemorative “key to the city” after a video showing him attacking Cassie surfaced in May.
BABY OIL, AR-15 RIFLES
Prosecutors said Combs and his associates used bribery and violence such as arson and kidnapping to try to keep his conduct secret.
In a March 2016 incident that resembles Cassie’s description of his alleged attack, prosecutors said Combs was captured on a hotel security video striking and dragging a woman trying to leave a “Freak Off.” Combs then offered a stack of cash to a hotel security officer who intervened, prosecutors said.
In 2011, Combs and a co-conspirator kidnapped a person at gun point to facilitate a break in, prosecutors said. Two weeks later, Combs’ co-conspirators set a car on fire, and he later bragged about his role in the arson, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said Combs’ employees helped arrange the “Freak Offs” by booking hotel rooms and buying controlled substances and other items used during sex, according to the indictment.
During raids of his homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach, Florida six months ago, authorities found drugs and 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant, along with AR-15 rifles with defaced serial numbers, the indictment said.
