Shell management will be sued for indifference to the environment. Shell stock prices are falling
A group of Shell shareholders sued the oil company’s board of directors over their lack of activity in implementing environmental initiatives, Bloomberg reported. Shell stock prices are falling.
According to the suit’s authors, the reluctance to approve an energy transition strategy that follows the Paris Agreement amounts to a breach of the director’s legal duties.
“The board has stubbornly pursued a transition strategy that is fundamentally flawed, leaving the company seriously exposed to the risks that climate change poses to the future success of a Shell company, despite the board’s legal duty to manage those risks,” said Paul Benson, a plaintiffs’ representative and ClientEarth senior attorney.
The Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015 with the goal of slowing global warming to well below 2°C.
