The U.S. stock market closed lower, with the Dow Jones down 0.90%. Why is the U.S. stock market down today?

U.S. stock market futures declined last week amid negative dynamics in the oil and gas, health care and commodities sectors.
At the close on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones was down 0.90%; the S&P 500 was down 0.74% and the NASDAQ Composite was down 0.70%.
Why is the U.S. stock market down today?
On the NYSE, 2,143 stocks fell in price more than were on the plus side (958) and 98 were flat. On NASDAQ, 2,359 stocks were down, 1,374 were up, and 226 remained flat.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on the S&P 500 options trading, rose 2.42% to 22.83.
Gold futures for February delivery added 0.36%, or 6.50, to $1.00 per troy ounce. As for other commodities, WTI crude futures for January delivery rose 0.10%, or 0.07, to $71.53 a barrel. Futures on Brent crude for February delivery rose by 0.72%, or 0.55, to $76.70 per barrel.
Meanwhile, on the Forex market, EUR/USD remained unchanged 0.25 percent to 1.05, while USD/JPY gained 0.02 percent to 136.68. The USD index futures rose 0.17% to 104.93.
